Who Are We?

We are two Australian lawyers each from our respective corners of Sydney and Melbourne. Drawn to the charm and chaos of working in the emerging markets of the Mekong region, we began our separate journeys by gaining years of experience in senior roles at traditional law firms working on legal matters in Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. Our paths eventually crossed while working together in Laos in 2016.

Bonded by our shared values and frustrations with traditional law firm models in the region, we have a vision to provide more affordable, practical and accessible legal services. Mekong Legal is the culmination of our journeys and aspirations. We established this law firm for us to practice and progress our passion in delivering quality legal services to our clients – completely online.

As a new generation of lawyers, we are firm believers in the “NewLaw” approach to legal services. Our fees are provided on a fixed-fee basis with no hidden costs and no surprises!

Our Services

Whether you are an individual, business, NGO, embassy or organisation, we are here to help.

For employers and employees, we can assist with drafting and reviewing employment contracts, company or organisational handbooks (also known as ‘internal regulations’) and advising on all aspects of Lao labour law.

Our research arm aims to improve labour and employment conditions by providing evidence-based research into policy-making and development. Furthermore, as ethically-minded lawyers, we will be giving back to the local Lao community through pro-bono legal services.

Legal Resources

We recognise the difficulties of navigating the Lao labour law. Publicly available information is scarce, unreliable and easily misunderstood.

Leveraging our experience and unique insights into issues essential to employers and employees, we have collated the information we believe you need to know before you enter the market and when you are on the ground.

We encourage you to browse through our legal guides, updates and articles. If you are seeking information about aspects of Lao law we have not provided here, we have the resources to assist you.
